Old times
Had a great two hour lunch with my friend. Lots of laughter about the good old days -- we've known one another more than 20 years. She's doing amazingly well. Involved in a project (she's a pagan) and when that's over, talked about doing theater again, maybe a play of mine that hasn't been done here yet. I have some. With no budget shows, especially when friends direct, I use a coop model of royalties: nothing upfront, box office first pays all the bills, and everything is split after that according to shares, producer/director 2 shares, everyone else in cast and crew, including playwright, 1 share, though sometimes I take only a fraction or nothing, especially if the pot isn't very big. In the mid-80s, with a hyperdrama in a bar, this model was earning about $50/share a night, so everyone was making $150/week, which was outstanding for non-union theater in those days. This was helped considerably by the fact that hyperdrama in a contemporary setting has virtually no technical costs. No costumes or lights to pay for. We rented the space for another share, and the owner got the rest in drinks etc. We ran this pony for about 3 weeks before it tapered off, and once folks were making less than $100/week, having gotten spoiled, they decided to bag it.

I remember that hyperdrama (Cocktail Suite) for the night a drunk came in off the street just before the show started, sat next to an actor at the bar -- and passed out! We just left him there. Folks thought it was a great touch ha ha and marveled how he kept "his concentration." This reminds me of the show I saw at Storefront when it was on Russell St. in North Portland and a dead rat fell from the ceiling in the middle of a scene. Ah, realism!

If she actually does do a show of mine, I suggested Famililly or The Sadness of Einstein, neither ever done on the west coast.

I learned my friend's son is now a computer geek. Maybe he can solve my network problem, which stumps me.
